Exemplar Logic Announces Support For Altera Mercury Device Family

LeonardoSpectrum Synthesis Tool Supports Worlds' First Programmable ASSP

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Feb. 26, 2001 - Exemplar Logic®, a Mentor Graphics® Company, today announced that its LeonardoSpectrum (LS) 2001.1 tool, the leading FPGA synthesis solution, supports Altera's new Mercury™ device family, the world's first programmable ASSP. Integrated with Altera's Quartus™ II development software, LS 2001.1 provides Mercury device users with a powerful synthesis tool that offers push-button and incremental methodologies with specialized features for the development of next-generation programmable devices. Altera's Mercury devices will play a key role in communication applications by combining 1.25 Gbps CDR transceivers with programmable logic addressing serial backplane, chip-to-chip and line-side applications.

"Exemplar has worked closely with Altera to ensure our programmable ASSP devices receive the highest level of design synthesis support," said Tim Colleran, Altera vice president of product marketing. "LeonardoSpectrum 2001.1 delivers performance-oriented features for our new Mercury device family enabling designers to quickly and easily synthesize programmable ASSPs while achieving high quality of results (QoR). This type of support is absolutely critical to communications designers looking to rapidly deploy new systems with Mercury devices."

Exemplar's LeonardoSpectrum synthesis tool provides advanced optimization and technology mapping of HDL designs to architecture-specific resources in Mercury devices. Advanced features include mapping of logic to Mercury device logic and I/O atoms, automatic inference of single, dual, and quad port RAMs/ROMs, support of D-type flip-flops with either set or reset and optimization to Mercury device counters. LS 2001.1 also provides tight integration with Altera's Quartus II development software to ensure optimal results for Mercury device netlists. Furthermore, the newly improved Quick Setup flow in LS 2001.1 provides Mercury device users with faster run-time performance while at the same time delivering higher QoR.

"Altera's advancements in programmable logic have contributed significantly to the growth of the FPGA industry. By developing communications systems with Altera's Mercury programmable ASSPs, designers can achieve new levels of integration, reliability, and system performance never available before in PLDs," said Anne Sanquini, vice president and general manager for the HDL Design division of Mentor Graphics. "Mercury device users who incorporate LS 2001.1 into their design flow can rapidly develop high-speed communications designs running at optimal performance levels."

Price and Availability
LeonardoSpectrum 2001.1 is available immediately. U.S. list price for LS 2001.1 Level 2 starts at $8,950. List price for the Level 3 version of the product starts at $17,500. Supported platforms include Windows® NT, 95, 98 and 2000, Solaris™ and HP-UX platforms. LS 2001.1 can also be found in Mentor Graphics FPGA Advantage™, which provides designers with a complete FPGA design flow including best-in-class design entry, simulation and synthesis capabilities.

About Altera
Altera Corporation, The Programmable Solutions Company®, was founded in 1983 and is a leading supplier of programmable logic devices (PLDs). Altera's CMOS-based PLDs are user-programmable semiconductor chips that enhance flexibility and reduce time-to-market for companies in the communications, computer peripheral, and industrial markets. By using high performance devices, software development tools, and sophisticated intellectual property cores, system-on-a-programmable-chip (SOPC) solutions can be created with embedded processors, memory, and other complex logic together on a single PLD. Altera common stock is traded on The Nasdaq Stock Market under the symbol ALTR. More information on Altera is available on the Internet at http://www.altera.com.
